Through and through, Moon is a PS1 game from 1997 that has a brand new English localization and no other visible refinements. Requiring players to go outside of the game to get answers just places Moon more firmly into its niche. However, it’s 2020 and the fact no such explanation, even in the form of a digital instruction manual, is included is a major bummer. Yes, if I had played this game in 1997, I would have had the instruction manual on hand and this wouldn’t have been as confusing. The UI and menus are hard to figure out, so much so that Moon’s developer posted the instruction manual the weekend of release to help clear things up. If you run out of energy, you lose everything you did that day and start over. The only time you can save is when sleeping and, especially early on, you have limited energy so you have to sleep often. Why? Well, in-game, this isn’t explained clearly. Then, you might just pass out and have to do it all again. Do the quest and return to Gramby to earn some love, which can be used to level up. You come into this world and are soon tasked by Gramby, a character who knows more about you than even you do at the time, to go complete a simple quest: pick up bread from the baker. Invisible to all until finding some clothing, the game hints at your greater purpose. Your in-game child tries to go to bed but is sucked into the world of the video game. He blows up enemies with lightning powers. ![]() The king says a dragon has eaten the moon, so the sword-wielding hero takes to the streets to find out what’s up. A game-within-a-game structure kicks off the action as you, as a video game-loving child, boot up a new game and play through what seems to be a typical Super Nintendo-era RPG. Moon is completely in Japanese and was never released outside of Japan. Nintendo also has been Skip's only publisher and frequently works with Vanpool. And if you managed to influence a masterpiece like Majora's Mask you managed to influence video games in general. Majora's Mask side-quest concept of helping people as the day goes by does share some similarities with Moon. Though it's only my own assumption -since I never heard Eiji Aonuma or Yoshiaki Koizumi mention it- Nintendo may have been influenced by Moon while developing The Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask. The intial hours can be a little frustrating because of the time limit and there are a few annoying quests, but stick to it and you'll find an artistic game unlike anything on the Playstation. Moon is lovely and beautiful from start to finish. Some scenarios can only be found at certain days and certain times of day. The game has a clock and calender system where characters move around town in various times of the day. It's influence can be felt in various games today. Though most of it's legacy is keeped by studios like Skip and Vanpool, who were founded by the disbanded Lovedelic members. Moon is an obscure yet pretty influencial game. As the boy's love level grows he can stay up later and later and the player can continue exploring further into the world. In the begining the boy can only stay up for half a day untill he needs to go to sleep, little can be done in that time. ![]() The more he helps the more his love levels grow. The boy helps the people and the monsters and brings some love and joy into to their lives. Instead of regular levels in an RPG where the characters grow stronger to be able to kill stronger beasts, Moon instead uses a love system. The game is frequently described as an anti-RPG. The world is terrorized by a man called the "Hero" who kills innocent monsters and invades people's homes and rubs them of their things. While he's sleeping the TV and video game system turns on by itself and sucks him into the world of the RPG he was playing. During playing his Mom tells him to go to bed and he does so. Moon is about a small boy who's playing an RPG. The game was developed by Lovedelic (a studio founded by ex-SquareSoft employees) and was released in 1997, it was Lovedelic's debut game.
